Sustainable Income

Sustainable projects are the way the people and children of Moi's Bridge are going to be able to take care of themselves into the future.

These projects require an up-front investment and operating costs but then generate enough income to fund the next year as well as a profit to aid the school and the children.

The up-front investment includes such things as the purchase or rental of land, the purchase of seed. Operating costs include such things as ploughing, planting and weeding labor, harvesting, etc. Our goal is to help expand these operations.

In 2010, there were 8 acres under cultivation. The profit made was $180 per acre. In 2011, there were 13 acres under cultivation and the profit per acre was $177, or 38%. That's a pretty good return on investment.

The target for this year 2012 is 20 acres. However, it was necessary divert funds to help cover food and wages at the school. The children's health is top priority. So, funding the cultivation of 20 acres has a shortfall of $nnnnn for 2012.

It is estimated that 50 acres would generate enough income to pay for the food and wages of the school at it's present size. 100 acres would generate enough income to make the entire operations self-sufficient.

Sustainable Income Projects

It is a paramount objective of both Aid2Africa and Hope for Children to make the Waymarks Education Center and Children Homes self-sufficient. Given the current infrastructure of the area, agricultural and animal husbandry projects are the most viable at this time.

PROJECT: Cultivation of Maize and Beans

There is already a successful maize and bean growing project. It produces enough to pay for the next year plus a profit for each acre planted. The goal here is simple, each year expand the acreage under cultivation. This pays for everything involved such as land rental, plowing, planting labor, seeds, fertilizer, weeding, security, harvesting, and transportation.

The total cost to put one acre under cultivation is around $500.
The profit margin per acre is expected to be 30% ($150) or more.

PROJECT: Fruit Trees

This project would pay for the planning and care of various fruit trees around the school property.
