Who is God?

God is the creator of all things. God is the supreme being. God is the ruler of the universe. God is holy. God is light. God is Good. God is just. God is Love. God is more than we can comprehend.

What is the Nature of God?

I think one of the most important foundations of a Christian’s Faith is to have a proper understanding of the nature of God and his attributes. God is extremely tolerant because every second of the day millions of people underestimate his greatness and Sovereignty. God is far more than we can comprehend with our limited minds and in our state of existence. There is danger in underestimating God.

The Bible does tell us a lot about God’s nature. God was not created. God has always existed and always will exist. God exists outside of time. God is omnipresent, which means he exists everywhere at the same time. There is only one God, but he exists as three persons. God is all-powerful and all knowing. We were created in God’s image. That means we share some attributes of God, but certainly not all.

To get a more complete understanding of God’s nature we try to describe God by defining his “Attributes”. The word “Attribute” when used about a person refers to the inherent characteristics and qualities associated or belonging to that person. God's Key Attributes

God is a Person

In fact, three persons: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. This is called the Trinity. It does not mean there are three Gods. There is only one God. Each person of God has all the attributes of God. Some people have a difficult time understanding this. There are many things we do not understand in the Bible. Understanding need not be a prerequisite for believing. Consider when Moses asked God who he was on the mountain. God replied, “I am that I am”. What kind of an answer is that? Well, it’s the best answer that can be provided to our limited minds. So it is with the trinity, there is only so much we can understand about it. There are some things about God that we accept as faith in what the Bible says even if we have difficulty understanding them.

The triune nature of God is clearly evident in the Bible despite some people’s attempts to deny it. It is a mystery. Explore more about the Trinity here.

What is God up to? What are his plans, objectives, goals?

What do the stories in the Bible tell us about what God is up to? What is his agenda? I think there are macro level or major themes and minor level or sub-themes. And, that doesn’t mean the minor level themes are less important. Here are some of my thoughts.

I think God wants to have a relationship with us. He wants to bring us to him. He does not desire for us to be apart from him. Unfortunately sin drives us away from God. God will not have anything to do with sin. This issue is at the core of much of God’s actions as described in the Bible.

I believe God wants to demonstrate His sovereignty. That is his supreme power and control over everything. And that it is futile to oppose his will.

God loves us and is saving us from ourselves. God desires our love out of Free Will. But, we are imperfect and not capable of loving God, as we should. With God there is perfect justice. Our sins must be paid for. We are not capable of saving ourselves so God is intervening to save us.

In God's creation he set the rules.

What does this mean? It means that God in his infinite wisdom created a physical universe that operates according to certain laws and truths. He created a spiritual world too. Everything in the physical world operates in accordance to these laws. We see this as Cause and Effect. Put another way in our personal lives, for every decision we make there are consequences.

As we know God created us. But he created us special as compared with most of his universe. He created us with "Free Will" While we cannot overcome the physical laws of the universe in which we live we do create our own destiny. (More on that when we discuss Predestiny).
